Our Story and Mission:
About Kat and Dave
Three years ago I stepped foot onto the Carpinteria High School Campus for my first day on the job as a Youth Service Specialist (YSS), employed through the Council of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (CADA). That year I taught 4 Reconnecting Youth Classes, 2 at Rincon High School, and 2 at Carpinteria High School. Each class deepened my respect of the courage and resilience that all of these students had shown. One of my classes happened to be an all guys class where throughout the semester we were given the opportunity to talk about "What does it mean to become a man"? This question will spark different answers all over the world, depending on a variety of factors. These kids began coming up with incredibly insightful answers like: "When you are a Dad that sticks around and is involved in your family", "When you are able to hold a job", "Helping provide for your family", "Being able to uphold responsibility". The kids knew I roasted coffee as a hobby, but one of them said, "Dave, will you hire us?". Of course I said I wouldn't be able to hire them because I didn't even have a company and they would never make any money. But as I left school that day, and as the wheels kept on turning, I came home and Kat and I began to dream about actually being able to hire these students. "What if we could work alongside of them, working towards a common goal, teaching skills that we wouldn't be able to teach in a school?" Because the truth is that sometimes, people just need a chance, an opportunity, a role model. One positive role model and relationship can change the course of someone's life. Just like the man God used in my life my junior year of high school. Could we be those people for the youth in Carpinteria?
Enter: Penny Wagon Coffee Roasters
Our long-term goal is that we would open up a coffee cafe that not only employs local youth but also offers different niches for our youth to grow in whether that be in job skills, musical talent, artistic flourishing, or general life skills. Most importantly it would be a place where our community can gather and a fun place for kids to hang out on weekends!
In the meantime, we are donating 10% of the profits of every bag of coffee that's purchased to a scholarship for a graduating high school student facilitated through the Carpinteria Education Foundation. This scholarship will be provided to a high school senior who has been actively involved in the Carpinteria After School Programs through Elementary, Middle, and High School.
Since the 1500's drinking coffee has been used as a means to bring people together. It's a ritual that begs for all of us to slow down and connect with old friends, brainstorm new ideas, and think deeply about the important things in life. Great ideas are born when we allow ourselves to be still and think in a world that rushes around us at glaring speeds. At Penny Wagon Coffee, our thinking and desire is to create jobs for young people with obstacles to employment. We believe there's no better way to connect with and encourage humans than by working alongside them.
Penny Wagon Coffee Roasters is a faith-based company that uses coffee as a means to reach "at risk" youth and the fatherless. We strive to make the best coffee possible through meticulous study and pride ourselves on working hard to do it.
